There were some red flags in the reviews, but I ignored them. I thought, “Robert Altman, especially in the early ’70s, might have gone over their head. Then I saw John Williams did the music. I was ready for this one.

Maybe I should have listened to the reviews. It was oddly paced. It was really, really slow, but it felt speedier than it was. Then I started noticing the zooms and cutaways to random things and realized that’s what was keeping my interest. Certainly not the story.

Maybe 1972 was too far back, but I was excited after a few great missed 1980 films.
